NO UNITY WITHOUT PURITY
Amanda Surtes
As a teenager, I was swayed by what I saw on television and in the
movies and heard over the radio. It was easy to fall into the trap,
because they presented everything to seem so appealing. I was told
that the whole world should be "united" and that I should follow the
"trend." So, I ran away from home at sixteen, dropped out at
seventeen and got pregnant at seventeen. On the one hand, things
didn't seem right, but, on the other hand, I wanted my "independence."
So, although I gave up so much, I reemerged with convictions
which will reward me, later on, and will help you too, if you listen.
Having pride in who and what you are is really important. I,
originally, had felt that I should be proud of my heritage and blood,
but, now, those things have come back to be the focus of my life. I
had been convinced that purity was something to be ashamed of,
which made it easier for me to be misled and put down. Just don't
listen, when they tell you that purity is something "defective." It is not.
You are like a wonderful, marble statue, but, if you let doubts about
your blood and worth intrude, it is like a crack in the base, which
gets larger and larger, until your foundation bursts and you crumble.
Standing alone is not the way to go. I speak from experience. I was
in love with a man I thought to be good, pure and Christian, but he
abandoned me, at the first hint of adversity. What had been left
out of the equation were the qualities of "loyalty," "respect" and
"honor." I should have had the pride to buck such a horrible trend,
but I did not, although now I do. Our best-instincts tell us to have
a family, but should, also, beckon us to wait for the right mate. It
is up to us to change this destructive pattern. A woman should stand
by her blood and morals, as well as by her man.
So, no matter what the temptations, don't take the easy way out.
It's easy to just give in and let Hollywood tell you how to run your
life. But, the path of purity is the far more rewarding. A child should
not grow up without a father and even the strongest woman needs
a pair of stronger arms to hold her up, in times of trial. I don't
wish to preach, but practicing right from wrong is a huge issue.
Circumventing family-life can lead to impure-liaisons, which can
lead to contamination of the gene-pool. Many out there wish to
"unite" us with the worst. Let us "unite" ourselves with the best.
